Xquartz is the x11/quartz back end. Qaurtz (without the X) uses the
quartz windows manager (not based on X11).

I know from the past that Quartz (without X11) will compile but the
window is messed up (the 3D mainly is legible but all the other areas
that  don't contain 3D are messed up). That has been a long standing
issue with just the Quartz Window manager. The XQuartz interface does work.

I will have to see if homebrew supports X11 backend. It probably does
but I can't recall how to change it. I will try it this weekend if I
have some time. But for the time being you might consider seeing how
things look with Macports instead.
