I assume you want to distribute you backgammon program once it's
finished?!

GNU Backgammon is licensed under the GNU Public License (GPL)
(http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl.html). This license allows you to
modify and distribute the code under certain conditions; in short, you
would have to distribute your own program under the GPL. There is a FAQ
available at http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl-faq.html.
Alternatively you can consider using the external player interface of
gnubg.
