I haven't looked at any of this code, so it may be impossible or
undesireable, but...


What you suggest is exactly the what fibs2html is doing.

Suppose the html images output also included .png's of the board upper
and lower edges including numbers (top and bottom edges with numbers
for both player's numbering)

The board top/bottom are in a separate image. What Joern says is that since images come from GNUbg, and those stay fixed for your chosen direction, only one set is generated today.

BTW - this inconsistency is true for the game record as well.

Then you could actually choose based on player on roll which upper and
lower edges to select and the numbers would be on the board rather than
around it.
