Got it! In order to get the dice a nice, bright, white, I'd set the Diffuse
slider down to 1.0. This made the pips go greyish rather than black. Increasing
diffuse to 4.5 still gives white dice, but allows the spots to be a solid
black. It must be something to do with the way the indented-spot look is drawn.
GnuBg must be open to all sorts of cheating accusations if it isn't even using
precision dice, which have smooth spots, of course ;o)
