shouldn't 'configure' throw a message if gettext isn't found, like it
does with the others (automake-1.6, pkg-config, ESD & ArtsC)? and if
gettext is required it shouldn't actually try to build much at all, in
my opinion.
everything built correctly after installing gettext, though.
