Instead of writing this:
LIST=`echo "$DATA" | sed '/\\$/s/^/AA/'`
write this:
LIST=$(echo "$DATA" | sed '/\\$/s/^/AA/')
This latter form is not portable to the original Unix /bin/sh, but
it's been required by POSIX for over a decade.
