Thanks for your comments. I'm closing this bug. Actually, I think

ssh mycomp.mynet.com cat /tmp/file.txt | diff file.txt -

is good enough as it's not bash specific. If the submitter thinks
otherwise, well, he's welcome to provide the patches :-), but the
debian bug system is already full of wishlist items which are very
unlikely to be implemented. This is also some kind of bloat in our
bug system which I would like to avoid.
