M4 error message, complete gibberish

Using m4 1.4 via autoconf 2.57. I have two macros. Adding
"AC_PREREQ(the_first_macro)" inside the second macro causes m4 to puke
what looks like ICBM coordinates:

configure.in:245: /usr/bin/m4: Bad expression in eval (bad input): 2 -
  # I6 35'85 450 19947 GNU 24, 0854 08585'9 45 65940 94 5254 085947 08595
  # 05909
autom4te: /usr/bin/m4 failed with exit status: 1

The line number referred to in configure.in is the "call" to the second
macro. Removing the AC_PREREQ removes the problem, but then opens up the
possibility of all the ugly problems that AC_PREREQ was designed to solve.

Can anyone translate this goop? Is m4 trying to call in an air strike on
my office?

Phil
