Dear Dr. Stepan Kasal

Thank you for your prompt reply.

I understand Windows 98 supports euc and utf8 besides shift-jis, but my
favorite editor can handle only shift-jis or perhaps I don't know how to
set it up correctly.

Most filter-type tools I use are also confined to shift-jis data.

I don't know the concept of ``export'', for what I know about run-time
setting is ``enviroment variable'' only.

Anyway, I clicked the Cygwin icon and typed in

        export LC_ALL=japanese.sjis

to bash prompt.

After that, I tried to type in the afore-mentioned string pattern using
WXG IME but never succeeded. So I returned to COMMAND PROMPT and made a
pattern file of the string in the cygwin root directory.

With this preparation, I experimented all over again. Cygwin Window
(bash prompt), exportation of the locale, and running grep with the
pattern file. And the same error message and aborton.

I tried this twice. First starting from Cygwin Window, Secondly starting
from COMMAND PROMPT where ``c:Cygwin\bin'' is added to PATH, enter
``bash'' then locale exportation etc.

That's all to supplement the previous bug report on GREP.

What I like to do is: Starting from COMMAND PROMPT, skip ``bash'' and
run ``grep'' directly under ``dos'' prompt. To me, Cygwin Windows is a
little despotic in that the directories outside of Cygwin cannot be
reached.

                                           Sincerely yours,

                                                        KAMINISHI Toshio
