"newbie's minGW+msys" + "src.tar.gz from gnu.org" is no go. ?correct method?

How do I get any tools working?

This attempt is diffutils-2.8.1. (all other attempted
packages have same problems)

downloaded the src tar.gz; decompressed with winzip
(working on doing same natively)
read readme, install, installme.

./configure //ok I guess. 122 yes's to 78 no's
make        //big nope.  Here is the first line that
            //seems to me to be an error:
waitpid.c:29: parse error before "waited_pid"
            //need more?

mingw.faq
msys.readme
Google ((msys OR mingw) (packages OR src OR source OR
"tar.gz")) 

VERSIONS:
gcc.exe (GCC) 3.2 (mingw special 20020817-1)
GNU bash, version 2.04.0(1)-release (i686-pc-msys)
MinGW 2.0.0
MSYS  1.0.8
