OK, I have finally nailed this one down. It is a "locale" problem after all.
It seems that with grep-2.4.2 if you have your "locale" unset or set to "C",
all is fine. However, if you have it set to something else, problems arise.
A few things to note:
1) This is not a problem with grep-2.4
2) This bug does not get caught in the "make check" step of the grep-2.4.2
build
3) The locale is set by default on Mandrake systems. (On mine it's set to
LANG=en).
I hope this helps.
Thanks for your help,
-Chris
ps: I have manually set LANG=en_CA on my Redhat system because gdm-2.0beta4
seems to set it to "(null)" which causes perl to have a hissy fit. But that's
a bug for another day...
