Thanks Noam.  I think I knew that at some point...!  Loading a bash script and 
checking the value of smie-config shows that it has indeed been read in 
correctly.  And my files still indent as expected (and desired!) now that I've 
removed the sh-indentation from my custom-set-variables section.

Looks like it's all working as it should now! :-)
