As far as I can tell from the code, this only affects the current terminal (GUI frame). What seems to work is this: emacs -Q -nw --eval '(setq x-command-line-resources "emacs.synchronous: true")' I've tried the recipe --without-toolkit-scroll-bars; the error does not occur under this configuration. There is some other minor trouble (not really related to this bug I think): the scrollbar does not get drawn (the space where it should be is all white instead) when first opening the frame, unless I've set synchronous mode as above.
