Both. Grep is pretty fast on my machine (1.5 year old laptop, with Intel Core i7 and an SSD drive).

gid is much faster in large directories, especially if they are
accessed over NFS or some such.  So it scales better.

I'm sure it is, for large codebases. Just not sure if it has any tangible advantages for Emacs (and it has a disadvantage: has to be updated manually).

If you forget, you will be reminded when you find no matches.

I might find 1-2 fewer matches than I should, instead of no matches.

And I'm actually aware of how it works. That won't be true for a random user.
