This stops the flickering, but doesn't show any echo-area messages at
all. Is that the intent?
Also, there's a related issue: why should
"M-x byte-compile-file RET" behave differently than
"M-x emacs-lisp-byte-compile RET" wrt to messages displayed in the
echo area?
