Hmm... so the menu-bar is updated in a timely manner according to your
actions, but the windows's content inside the frame aren't?  I guess
mode lines aren't updated either.  What about scrollbars?

Could you try a non-Gtk build (i.e. --with-x-toolkit=lucid)?
