I had the same question. `C-q' should just work here, like
elsewhere - and it still does AFAICT.
I'm guessing that perhaps you (Juri) meant only that it is no
longer the *only* way to insert such a char into the search string,
so it need not be advertised as such.
But surely it should continue to be supported (and not considered
deprecated obsolete), unless there is some good reason otherwise.
