Here is a revised patch for Bug#11604.
It attempts to address all the comments raised.
Thanks to everybody who reviewed the earlier patch.

+       All uses changed.
+       (union Lisp_Object): Don't worry about WORDS_BIGENDIAN; the
+       code works fine either way, and efficiency is not a concern here,
