Yes they are. Eg case "$opsys" in netbsd|openbsd) LD_SWITCH_SYSTEM="\$(LD_SWITCH_X_SITE_AUX_RPATH) $LD_SWITCH_SYSTEM" ;; esac Note escaped \$, so these references appear in the Makefile unexpanded.
