bug#5235: 23.1; Unibyte keyboard input problem

--unibyte is deprecated, so rather than try and "fix" it, we want to fix
the problem that caused you to use --unibyte.

So what happens if you read those files as binary (i.e. C-x RET
r binary RET)?
