suggestion for emacs improvement

hello:

i've just started using emacs, and one thing that i find particularly difficult 
with the GUI is that there is not syntax selection pull down menu.  In VIM, I 
could choose syntax editing and highlighting through a variety of languages 
through clicking on the pull-down menu and selecting the programming language 
that I desire.  I'm sure that having a pull-down programming-language-selection 
menu tab would make emacs much easier and accessible to newtime users.
