      Emacs is generally extremely conservative in
    turning on features by default.

That's true--I am conservative about changing the defaults.  I usually
prefer to add features that are upward compatible or else disabled by
default.

The one main exception is with GUI features that are aimed at new
users.  They usually are daunted by enabling features that are
disabled by default, and probably won't even find out about them.  But
these features don't change the behavior of keyboard commands, so they
don't really interfere with editing by experienced users.  Also, the
number of these features is not very large.
