X performance suffers under emacs 21.1.1

In GNU Emacs 21.1.1 (i386--freebsd, X toolkit, Xaw3d scroll bars)
 of 2001-11-09 on pyrl.eye
configured using `configure  --prefix=/usr/local i386--freebsd'

Please describe exactly what actions triggered the bug
and the precise symptoms of the bug:

I subjectively notice a large performance drop in the response of
numerous other X applications while running gnus and downloading &
saving articles under the new emacs.  For example, mouse movement is
noticably jerky.  This did *not* happen in previous versions.
