I'm pretty much at the end of my wisdom.  The only thing unusual I see 
so far is the X server, which doesn't seem to be a plain XFree server.
Can you try this with other servers?  I'm also not about the XFree
version you are using.  If it's 3.3, does upgrading to 4.1 help?
