gnus makes emacs freeze |

If I try to start gnus, I see the line drawing of a gnu, then emacs freezes
totally. None of the menus or key combo commands work, and it can only be
turned off externally.
My emacs version is GNU Emacs 20.7.1 (i386-suse-linux, X toolkit). It does
this in X windows and on the console.
