This is a crash inside garbage collection....

Yes, much more useful.
However, I didn't see GC crashes in Emacs 20.7 for years, so I'm
unsure what to suggest.
Is it possible that you have some hardware-related problem, like a bad
memory chip? Do other programs sometimes crash or fail without any
reason, just to run smoothly on a subsequent invocation?
