ls -l *is* correct in my experience.

I'm not sure you understand, because the distribution version
of a file *is* the same as the development version.
We just don't keep the $Id$ tag in the files at all because they
are inconvenient.  You don't see them, I don't see them, nobody sees them.

Some people like timestamps, so they wrote packages to maintain them.
The Emacs maintainers don't like them, so they don't use them.  They
are even more of a pain than $Id$ entries since they change even more
often, leading to even more spurious conflicts.
