lost file contents when disk was full

From: abbott
Subject: lost file contents when disk was full
Date: Wed, 2 May 2001 12:52:01 -0100 (GMT+1)

This bug report will be sent to the Free Software Foundation,
not to your local site managers!!
Please write in English, because the Emacs maintainers do not have
translators to read other languages for them.

In GNU Emacs 20.7.2 (alphaev56-dec-osf4.0d, X toolkit)
 of Mon Dec 4 2000 on factor.dima.unige.it
configured using `configure --with-pop'

Please describe exactly what actions triggered the bug
and the precise symptoms of the bug:

I edited one line in the file .mailrc
and upon trying to save (via C-X C-S) emacs gave a slightly
garbled error message saying the disk was full. After failing
to release enough space (independently of emacs) I quit emacs
(via C-X C-Q), logged out. Later when there was some free disk
space I returned to make the same change to .mailrc but found
that both the file .mailrc and the auto-recovery file were empty;
I had hoped to find the file .mailrc in tact since no change had
been made to it.

Obviously it was not possible to create a dribble file, as the disk
was full. In case it is relevant, the disk was very full: the "df"
Unix command reported 108% occupancy.

John Abbott.
