I didn't know that LaTeX accepts env vars that way.  It might be a side
effect of how the file is found (in which case, it might be fun to try
and put a "; rm -rf ~/." in the filename).

But in any case, the `$' indeed poses problems here (and in a few other cases
as well).  It's pretty much impossible in general to handle TeX properly
because of its funny catcode feature that allows redefining the meaning of
special chars (verbatim environments are another nasty case where {. $, and }
can appear without having their usual meaning).

In your specific case, you might be able to quote your dollar sign with
a backslash.  This would definitely fix it on the Emacs side, but I don't
know if it would break it for LaTeX.
