The only problem is finding out about this stuff without pouring through
the manual with a fine-tooth'ed comb!
I've been looking for that variable off-and-on for nearly a decade!
Texinfo documentation is great if you're in the mood for reading a book,
but it's not very good as a reference, even with advanced searching
functions in your viewer, etc. Half the problem is that there's no
permuted index (though that would require well written one-line
descritpions for each item), and the other half the problem is that
often related things are spread amongst many different sections. This
variable is a perfect example since it is not mentioned in the main node
to which it applies (i.e. "Compilation Mode").
