[Bug-gnupedia]Valid Questions and Thoughts

Hi, All,
I had a few questions and thoughts that I thought someone could address.

Besides this mailing list are their any other collaborative (and productive) resources which we can use on this project?  e.g. SourceForge or something like it?

To me GNE is, at it's core, a large-scale Internet-based Document Management System.  But instead of documents I would call the items that GNE handles resources.  One type of resource are the articles that we have been discussing up until now.  However, I don't think we should limit the scope of our thinking on what could be a resource.  Another type of resource might be an external link to an Internet-based resource which is External to GNE.  I think participants should be able to submit those types of resources as well.

Ideally, resources ready for submission to GNE could be in any format, e.g. text, Microsoft Word, HTML, etc., and could also be submitted via any method imaginable, i.e. e-mail, ftp, web-based form, etc.  All submitted resources would have to be converted in one way or another to a uniform format which optimizes the storage of these resources in some sort of central storage location.  The submission process and the storage process should be kept separate.

A 3rd part of this system would be the retrieval process.  If we have a storage specification that we make publically available then anyone should be able to build a front end of their choosing to the storage system.  If someone wants to make a specialty learning resource which is just about Birds they should be able to do so.

You might wish to have some sort of moderation system in between the storage and the retrieval process.  If done right you could have many types of moderations systems all built to the specifications of the front-end designers.

My ultimate front end to the storage system would be a web-based interface with a nice directory (subject-based) for browsing purposes and a search engine.  If I found a subject which I was interested, e.g. icebergs, the front end would generate a web page on the fly which had a body section containing an article on icebergs.  This article would have been filtered from all of the submitted articles on icebergs and it's choice would be somewhat on similar article that myself and others like me had moderated positively in the past.

From this page I could also scroll to other article about icebergs which might be close to the approval rating that my profile had scored this one as, it would give me the opportunity to bring up other article from the central storage which could be related to icebergs, e.g. the Titanic, it would provide me with external links to other internet-based resources which are relevants to the subject of icebergs, it would give me the opportunity to provide feedback to the article author on possible inaccuracies in the article, perhaps give me an area to discuss the subject matter with others who are interested in it as well and lastly would give me the opportunity to rate/vote/moderate this article if I hadn't already done so.  If I had I could change my previous rating or leave it the same.  If I had read this article before the front-end could point out to me changes that were made in this article since the last time I had read it and would even let me read older versions of this article compared to the new one.

These are a few of the things which I would expect to see in GNE.

Thanks,
Dan
