Hi.
I have done a projet about documentation ( doli :
 http://www.linux-france.org/prj/vidalc/ sorry it's in french :(.
 may be it could help you.

The main idea of this projet is to put on CD a lot of documention about 
opensource ( mainly linux doc like HOWTO and gnu doc ).

But, It could'nt be interesting if it is for only one Operating system, 
or only one architecture ( only for PC for example ).

So, A friend of mine, made a indexer in perl and
 I have patche a little a web server written in tcl to have
a search engine.

Now, I have a CD with all document and a search engine on it.
( It runs on window's , and unix system, I never test it on Mac )

I have made an web interface off my search engine
