Edit|Find... is very slow

For years, the Edit|Find... functionality has been very slow. When I use it to search a document of more than a few pages, it goes quickly through the first part of the document as shown by the Extracting Text message in the status bar, then suddenly slows to a crawl. It doesn't seem to matter how fast the processor is or how much RAM I have. 

Is there any chance of this function working faster?
