Well, yes: I agree that it's a really minor functionality, and it's
not worth to add more complexity.

Furthermore, it's almost 3 years that the compiled tools available at
http://mlocati.github.io/articles/gettext-iconv-windows.html don't
have this feature (see
https://github.com/mlocati/gettext-iconv-windows/blob/master/patches/gettext-0.19.8.1-configure/0001-fix-msginit.patch
), and nobody asked for them, so far ;)
