I have found that gettext-runtime depends on gettext-tools because of the tests in gettext-runtime. Surely there must be a way to make the running of the tests optional. If so then I could hack the the level Makefile to just visit the gettext-runtime directory. Of course, a more official fix would be nice.

I am not the only one to find issues deploying gettext to an embedded environment. I came across this ancient post this morning: http://www.mail-archive.com/address@hidden/msg03061.html. It talks about "dire consequences of installing gettext ". Any idea what this is referring to? The main issue for me is the size of the environment. Space is tight so I am trying to get rid of anything that isnt being used. A handful of libraries do use gettext so I do need the runtime but not the tools.
