The errors are described in the patch commit message (not precisely though; i
guess i could, just for you, unapply the patch and re-configure again).

The reason why i need to autoreconf is that autoreconf replaces bundled
devfiles (config.guess, for example) with the local ones, which have been
altered as necessary. While patching these changes in directly is possible,
this results in massive patches that are difficult to maintain. Autoreconfing
is cleaner.

The reason why you are not running into problems could be explained by me using
newer version of autotools. I'm reconfiguring with autoreconf-2.69.
