I've now merged these changes into the "polzer" branch.   The
automated tests pass.  If there is any manual testing also that you do
for your changes, could you redo that testing and let me know the
result?

I guess there will be a bunch of stuff for extended attributes and so
forth.   In fact, knowing what functionality exists in there which
doesn't yet have automated tests would also be useful for all of us.
Do you have a list?
