Thanks - I've applied the patch in git.

I found this GCC bug report from 2004 about a similar issue, but I don't think Enscript has the same portability requirements as GCC:

For the moment, I'm undecided whether configure should test for 'tail' - technically it probably should, but it seems rather overkill.
