Command parsing in ed is not trivial. There are a lot of changes in regex.c between 1.13 and 1.14.2, and I am not even sure that all the bugs have been fixed. Even if it were possible to optionally enable the old behavior, maybe it can't be done without introducing regressions. It needs some thinking. Of course, patches are welcome.
