I've solved the problem. (Your questions gave me some ideas on
where to look. Thanks!) The error message appears when a non-GNU
Make is unhappy with the GNU Make syntax. The solution (for me)
was to type "gnumake" instead of "make."
I was pretty sure it was a problem with me, rather than the
distribution. For the record, I'm trying to install on sun4
(sparc-sun-solaris2.8, according to config.guess) and I'm
using csh.
