My macOS terminal's encoding is of course UTF-8:

% echo $LANG
en_US.UTF-8

But when I ask ddd for its version, it prints information in ISO-8859:

% ddd --version
GNU DDD 3.4.0 (x86_64-apple-darwin21.6.0)
Copyright (C) 1995-1999 Technische Universit?t Braunschweig, Germany.

Copyright (C) 2001 Universit?t des Saarlandes, Germany.

% ddd --version | file -
/dev/stdin: ISO-8859 text

% ddd --version | iconv -f ISO-8859-1 -t UTF-8
