I have recently upgraded to TortoiseCVS version 1.10.9 (from 1.6.14).
In the earlier version all documents were successfully retrieved. Since
the upgrade I receive the error message "Empty password used - try 'cvs
login' with a real password. Then I am prompted for a password. I have very little experience with CVS and would appreciate any advise
as to what I've missed during the installation.
Thanks.

As your question seems to be more directed at the user interface (TortoiseCVS) than at the server, command line or client server protocol , you will need to ask folks who use your UI. BTW bug-cvs is for talking about bugs in (command line) cvs, info-cvs is for talking about problems [or even just cm concepts] using (command line) cvs, and on windows you are (usually)[1] using CVSNT as the command line version so your questions for it should go to their list.

for TortoiseCVS, WinCvs and CVSNT, you will get significantly better (and more) answers on the groups for those products.

Following list borrowed from Arthur Barrett

CVSNT newsgroup:
http://www.cvsnt.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/cvsnt
or
news://news.cvsnt.org/support.cvsnt

WinCVS newsgroup:
http://groups.yahoo.com/subscribe/cvsgui

TortoiseCVS newsgroup:
http://sourceforge.net/mail/?group_id=48103

Sorry I could not be of more help.

[1] on windows if you don't know you are using cygwin, then you are probably using CVSNT... if you don't know which [cygwin|CVSNT] please ask your local guru. Cygwin cvs questions would be asked on address@hidden
