The zlib library went from 1.1.4 to 1.2.1 on 2004-11-11. There has been
one other compression complaint, but I am not sure if Derek ever figured
out what was wrong or not.

No, I only got as far as confirming that one of the earlier bug reporters had sent me a copy of a client's communication stream that could check in a file pre zlib-1.2.1 and would cause the server to break post 1.2.1. I haven't had time to trace it further yet.
