Sorry to take so long to get back on this. I actually haven't had time to
fiddle with PuTTY to get it going. I've just used Cygwin's ssh, and that
works OK.

If anyone can make sense of PuTTY's log, here's a portion of it:

Enabling compression doesn't seem to help. I still get the same error:

E:\cvs\remote_repositories\ccvs>cvs -z5 version
