Opening this week at Landmark's Hillcrest Cinemas is "American Splendor," a 
film based on the comic book of the same name by one Harvey Pekar. The book 
centers around Pekar's life as a file clerk in Cleveland, Ohio.

 

"American Splendor," the comic book, was first published by Pekar in 1976 and 
continued on in this fashion until the early nineties when Dark Horse Comics 
picked it up for distribution. Throughout its run several renowned comic 
artists have helped illustrate Pekar's words. Among them are Robert Crumb, 
Frank Stack and Joe Sacco. The book won an American Book Award in 1987.

 

As an individual Pekar is an interesting character. He began his writing career 
as a music and book critic for the likes of the Boston Herald, Austin 
Chronicle, and Jazz Times, to name a few. In 1999 he began working for the 
radio station WKSU through which he's won several awards for his writing. And, 
finally, throughout the mid-eighties and early nineties he was a regular on 
"The Late Show with David Letterman."

 

In spite of all of this he's managed to keep a relatively low profile. He still 
lives in his hometown of Cleveland and retired from his file clerk job at the 
local VA Hospital in 2001. He'd worked there since 1966.
