As I said, most of what you suggested I've wanted to see implemented for 
quite awhile.  Stefan Monnier just sent a patch for the add/rm part. 
I'll try and review/commit it soon.

Your disconnected merges between workspaces I would leave to diff and 
patch and maybe a wrapper script.

Your email transport layer, if you were still going forward with it, I 
would also leave to wrappers.
