With NT/2000/XP, CVS should compose this
automatically using the HOMEDRIVE & HOMEPATH environment variables set
by the OS.

And for Win 98 it uses what by default? The error message is
not clear if I need to set that environment variable. I don't need
to set it for normal operations though???

Well, on all Windows platforms CVS first looks for HOME, then if it doesn't find it it attempts to compse HOME from HOMEDRIVE and HOMEPATH. It just so happens that the NT based systems automatically set HOMEDRIVE and HOMEPATH.

I thought "Could not discover home directory" was pretty clear. It is fairly clearly stated in the docs as well, I believe. Perhaps the error message deserves treatment in the troubleshooting section of the manual. Patches always welcome!!! :)

I assume that cvs1-11-5-branch is the main branch for bug
fixes.

Actually, that was a branch off of 1.11.4 which I used to insert the CAN-2003-0015 fix for 1.11.5 since some other work had been done on the trunk and I was in a hurry and didn't want to worry about evaluating and testing it at the time. It's defunct now.

And cvs1-11-x-branch is what is being used as a
precursor to cvs 1.12.1.

Nope. That's for stable releases. 1.11.6, 1.11.7, 1.11.X...

 And cvs1-11-2-branch is obsolete,
or has someone decided that that's a super-stable release
that is going to have bug-fixes applied to it?

That one's obsolete.

 Are these tags
documented anywhere?

They're documented in the email archives now. :) You can browse the ChangeLogs, NEWS files, and such and sometimes glean what what you were looking for. That's what I just did. Patches for the www project on cvshome.org are gladly accepted as well! :)
