Your touch command is deficient.  The command:

          touch 0704034371 bdir/subdir/file1

is intended to set the timestamp of bdir/subdir/file1 to 1971-07-04
03:43, but it's creating a file named 0704034371 instead.  Do you
perhaps have /usr/ucb in your path ahead of /usr/bin?
