No, I didn't.  In my opinion, tar should be used for that.

But tar has a very restrictive limit on the file name's length, which is why I stumbled across cpio in the first place.

Current tar formats have no restrictions on file name length or file length.

In particular, the “pax interchange format” is a completely standard extension of the older ustar tar format:

Pax interchange format is well-supported by GNU tar, star, bsdtar, and others.
