Ok, we will then try to get away without a modified cpio format. I really want to avoid having the tar format implemented in the core of RPM. As the format actually used internally is not exposed in the API we still have a few other options - like creating the cpio or tar or any other format on the fly in rpm2cpio (or a new rpm2tar). We'll see with what we end up with...
